Stepparent Adoption 

Mediation and Family Court Services provides Stepparent Adoption screenings when a stepparent wishes to legally adopt a stepchild.  An interview is scheduled with the parent and stepparent followed by a brief period of interaction with the child.  A public records check is also performed with the Wisconsin Department of Justice and La Crosse County Human Services Department Child Protection Unit.  Upon completion of the screening, a formal report is submitted to the Court.

Copies of all documents filed with the Court must be provided to Mediation and Family Court Services prior to your interview to enable staff to accurately complete necessary forms.

Your interview must be scheduled at least 6 weeks before the date of your adoption hearing to allow sufficient time to obtain and review records, complete the screening, and prepare the written report.  You will also receive information needed to obtain an amended birth certificate.

Fees: The $350 fee for this service is paid in advance.
