Vital Records applications will be accepted in-person Monday thru Friday (except holidays) from 8:00am until 4:15pm. Counter customers applying after 4:00pm will have their applications processed next day.
Birth and Marriage: If you were born and/or married in the State of Wisconsin, you can contact your nearest Register of Deeds office; any Wisconsin Register of Deeds office can assist with birth and marriage records.
Death: Any death that occurred in La Crosse County prior to September 01, 2013, the death certificate(s) must be obtained in this office; any death occurring after September 01, 2013, may be obtained at any Wisconsin Register of Deeds office.
Divorce: Any divorce that occurred in La Crosse County after January 01, 2016, can be purchased at any Wisconsin Register of Deeds office. If the divorce occurred prior to January 01, 2016, you must contact the Clerk of Courts office where the divorce was granted for a copy of the divorce decree or the State Vital Records Office in Madison for a copy of the certificate.

YOU MUST HAVE A DIRECT AND TANGIBLE INTEREST IN THE CERTIFICATE YOU ARE REQUESTING. Generally, this means the immediate family only, i.e., spouse, parent, child, brother, sister or grandparent.
If you are able to come into the office, our hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. You will receive over-the-counter, same day service. Birth, Death, Marriage, & Divorce records are $20.00 for the first copy, and each additional copy purchased at that same time of the same record is $3.00. There is no limit to quantities. Identification is required. Acceptable Forms of ID. We accept cash, money orders, certified checks, or credit & debit cards (there is an additional fee for credit/debit).
If requesting your certificate by mail, please use the correct application provided herewith. Fill in the applicant information (including signature), relationship, and the number of copies. One form will be needed for each individual record you are requesting. We require a money order or a cashier's check for all mail requests. Make these payable to Register of Deeds. DO NOT send a personal check. It will be returned to you for replacement. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope ** & you must include a photo copy of a valid ID such as a driver's license, state ID card OR 2 from the list given on the back of the application. All requests that meet the required criteria will be processed and mailed the same day the request is received. **If you would like your certificate(s) mailed back by certified mail, please add an additional $7.00 to your money order or cashier's check, you would then not need the SASE.
