County grants will support small businesses, housing and arts projects in 2026.
La Crosse County will invest $500,000 in local growth this year through grants supporting small businesses, housing, and arts and culture projects.
The initiative builds on last year’s success, when county grants helped open a restaurant and grocery store in La Crosse, assisted a family in rebuilding their home after a devastating fire in Onalaska, and supported a small business expansion.
In 2026, the $500,000 will be distributed across four programs, including a new SEED Grant designed to encourage entrepreneurship among startup businesses less than two years old.
“With our SEED grant, we’re really looking for new ideas with big potential,” said Sam Bachmeier, La Crosse County Community Development Specialist.
The SEED program offers grants of up to $20,000, with two funding rounds planned for 2026. Established businesses — at least five years old with fewer than 25 employees — can apply for up to $10,000 through the Innovation and Diversification program, which helps companies expand or diversify revenue. Last year, Priya’s Bazaar received a $10,000 grant through this program, enabling the business to grow from a small store into a larger retail space with a restaurant on the South Side of La Crosse.
“The investments La Crosse County makes through this grant funding support good jobs and housing and show value for taxpayers,” said County Board Chair Tina Tryggestad. “It’s a win-win.”
Arts and culture projects will also benefit, with grants of up to $5,000 available through four funding rounds in 2026. Past projects include the mural on the Board Store building on La Crosse’s north side (pictured) and funding to support the Artspire Festival.
“Art and culture projects not only celebrate our community but are also vital in attracting investment from outside residents and businesses,” Bachmeier said.
Finally, up to $400,000 will be available through the Acquisition and Demolition program, which supports developers, nonprofits, and homeowners in improving housing stock. Grants of up to $100,000 are available for multi-family projects and up to $50,000 for single-family projects.
“Increasing the supply of quality housing is key to growing our workforce, something La Crosse County views as a top priority,” Bachmeier said.

The grant programs will be overseen by a newly formed economic development committee, consolidating oversight that was previously spread across multiple committees. Bachmeier said the change will make the process more efficient and focused. Learn more about the county’s grant programs at lacrossecounty.org/community-development.
