A free service offered by the Register of Deeds can help reduce the risk posed by mortgage and property fraud.
La Crosse County Register of Deeds Robin Kadrmas is encouraging property owners to register for a free service aimed at preventing real estate fraud.
The county’s notification system will provide property owners with an email, phone call or text alert any time a real estate document is recorded against their name or business name. Protecting consumer information and real estate property is a priority for the Register of Deeds. According to the FBI, property and mortgage fraud is the fastest growing white-collar crime.
“Although there have not been any reported fraud cases in La Crosse County that I am aware of, there have been attempted cases in outlying areas and I want to make sure that La Crosse County residents stay protected and notified,” Kadrmas said.
Property Fraud Alert provides an early warning system for property owners to take action against possible fraudulent activity. Signing up is free and easy at propertyfraudalert.com or by calling 1-800-728-3858. Registrants can enter a property owner name or business name for one or multiple properties. You can also call the Register of Deeds office at 608-785-9644 with questions.
