Weather Events Present Road Issues for La Crosse County

Unprecedented weather events continue to cause serious road and bridge issues for the La Crosse County Highway Department. At the Monday, January 6th meeting of the County Board of Supervisors, Highway Commissioner Ron Chamberlain shared information regarding road and culvert washouts that have occurred, posing maintenance and budget concerns for La Crosse County.
To minimize the impact of lack of State funding, the La Crosse County Board of Supervisors voted to borrow $5 million annually for road construction projects in 2020. La Crosse County has the 6th lowest tax levy per capita in the State of Wisconsin and maintains its Aa1 bond rating. In 2018 68% of La Crosse County voters indicated support for a Premier Resort Area Tax (PRAT). The PRAT has not been implemented locally as the State legislature has not voted to allow a binding referendum on implementing the tax.
