Well Abandonment
Unsafe, unused, and unsealed abandoned wells are a hazard to public health
and endanger the groundwater supply. Wells that are not needed for
providing water for human use, commercial use, or for livestock and have not
been used for 3 or more years must be properly abandoned.
Private wells located in the City of La Crosse or the City of Onalaska may be
used once a permit to operate the well has been obtained from the city.
These wells are typically used for watering lawns, cooling systems, or
commercial and industrial uses. Information on the well permits may be
obtained from the city's water utility. Conditions of maintaining a
private well in the city may include a well inspection and a satisfactory
coliform bacteria test result. For water testing information, please
