KAJSIAB DINING - Hmong Elder Nutrition Site

"It makes us happy when we are out and about because we do not have to look out the window all the time" ~Hmong Elder

What is the Hmong ElderCare Program?

La Crosse County has approximately 100 Hmong elders age 60 and over. Some of these elders are isolated, and depressed because there are little opportunities to socialize and share their gifts and talents with the larger community. The Hmong elders also have a difficult time adjusting to their new life and new sense of

self in America due to transportation, language, and cultural barriers. Through socialization, nutrition, exercise, stimulating recreational activities, and educational excursions, the overall health and well-being of Hmong elders will increase.

Programs and services include:

  • Social and Recreational Activities: sewing, arts & crafts, tours and trips, gatherings, games            and projects
  • Transportation: available to Kajsiab Dining participants
  • Nutrition: nutrition education and a culturally appropriate meal
  • Exercise programs:
    • Physical exercise (strengthening exercise)
    • Exercise videos to loan out
    • Wii Games for fun and exercise
    • Walking (walking in place with video or walking on trails)
  • Health Education and Screening: Speakers on a variety of topics throughout the year along with an annual Health Fair for Hmong Elders each November where they have access to various health screenings
  • Cultural Brokering & Advocacy: Professional bilingual cultural brokers provide advocacy, translation, information and referral.
  • Video Library: of various topics to be loaned to Hmong Elders and their caregivers

We gather to share and learn!
