Welcome to the La Crosse County Clerk’s Fishing & Hunting License Web Page. We are located in the Administrative Center at 400 4th St. No. in Rm. 1210. Our office hours are Mon-Fri, 8:30 – 5:00. You may pay by cash or check, but we cannot accept a credit card or debit card.
WISCONSIN: With very few exceptions, all hunting and fishing approvals issued by the Wisconsin DNR are available for sale to the public here in the County Clerk’s office. BUY EARLY !! All Wisconsin licenses issued must be processed through the new Automated License Issuance System, "endearingly" referred to as ALIS. It is HIGHLY recommended that you DO NOT WAIT until the last day, or even the last week, to purchase any license or permit application. If the system "goes down" due to the heavy demand at these times, you may not be able to get a license at all. RESIDENCY: If you are over 18 years of age, you must present a current Wisconsin driver’s license or Wisconsin non-driver’s ID card in order to purchase a resident license. If you have neither of these, you must show some other proof that you are a Wisconsin resident in order to purchase a resident Wisconsin license. WISCONSIN DNR NUMBER: The first time you purchase a Wisconsin DNR privilege (license/stamp etc) you are issued a DNR number. It is helpful if you bring this number with you when you purchase your next license. If you do so, we will not have to ask for your social security number again. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: If you don’t yet have a Wisconsin DNR number or you or do not have it with you, you must provide your Social Security number to buy a hunting or fishing license. It is not required that you show your Social Security card, and if you are uncomfortable giving your number to the clerk, you may key it in on the keypad yourself. If you were born after January 1st, 1973, you must show your Hunter’s Safety Certificate card to purchase a hunting license. If you have lost your card, you can obtain a duplicate from the DNR. For further information on obtaining a duplicate Hunter’s Safety Certificate, call the La Crosse DNR office at 608-785-9000. APPLICATION: Please remember that it is not legal to buy a license for another person, unless you have their signed application form. These forms are available here and at the Department of Natural Resources in the State Office building at 3550 Mormon Coulee Rd. in La Crosse. The only exception to this rule is that you may purchase a permit application for another individual IF you have their Wisconsin DNR number. AREA AGENTS: In addition to the County Clerk’s office and the DNR office, there are other outlets in the County where you can purchase many of the licenses, applications, permits and stamps. You may contact the DNR Service Center at 608-785-9000 for a list of these outlets. I suggest you also contact the store in question regarding their hours and individual store policies. MISCELLANEOUS: Annual licenses, such as fishing, sports and small game, expire March 31st of each year. If an archery license is purchased after the season opens, there is a 3-day waiting period before the license is valid. Since there are over 50 different license, stamp, permit and application types in addition to the non-resident licenses and duplicate licenses it would be impossible to expound on them all here. Please call us at 608-785-9581 for further information during our regular office hours. We are happy to help you if at all possible. We are usually notified of new licenses, laws or policies by the Madison DNR office, and the DNR does supply us with regulation books for referral. However, most questions about regulations and enforcement are best answered by a warden. Therefore, if you have a question on hunting or fishing regulations or seasons we suggest that you contact the Department of Natural Resources’ La Crosse office at 608-785-9000, the Madison headquarters at 608-266-2105, or go to the Wisconsin DNR web site at http://www.dnr.state.wi.us.
IOWA: We carry the Iowa Hunting & Fishing license. This is a convenience primarily utilized by many area pheasant hunters. These are now processed on E.L.S.I (Electronic Licensing System of Iowa) so we are able to sell several Iowa licenses, as well as subscriptions to the Iowa Conservationist magazine. The cost is $80.50 for the Non-Resident Hunting License (18 & Over) and $11.50 for the Habitat Fee, which is necessary to validate a non-resident license. The Iowa Migratory Bird Fee is $8.50. IOWA DNR NUMBER: The first time you purchase an Iowa DNR privilege (license/stamp etc) you are issued a DNR number. It is helpful if you bring this number with you when you purchase your next license. If you do so, we will not have to ask for your social security number again. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: If you don’t yet have an Iowa DNR number or you do not have it with you, you must furnish your Social Security number to buy a hunting or fishing License. It is not required that you show your Social Security card, and if you are uncomfortable giving your number to the clerk, you may key it in on the keypad yourself. HUNTER SAFETY CERTIFICATE: If you were born after January 1st, 1967, you must show your Hunter’s Safety Certificate card to purchase a hunting license. The automated system will not allow us to continue processing without that number. If you have lost your Wisconsin Hunters Safety Certificate, you can obtain a duplicate from the Wisconsin DNR. For further information on obtaining a duplicate Wisconsin Hunter’s Safety Certificate, call the La Crosse DNR office at 608-785-9000. APPLICATION: The State of Iowa allows an individual to purchase a license for another if he has the necessary information. The required information would be the Iowa DNR number, the Social Security number, the Hunters Safety number, Date of Birth, Address, and description (sex, height, weight, color of eyes and hair). MISCELLANEOUS: Iowa licenses expire January 10th. A license purchased after December 15th will expire one full year from the 10th of the following January. WEB SITE: Check out the Iowa DNR web site for additional information at: http://www.iowadnr.com/.
FEDERAL: The Federal duck stamp can now be purchased through the Wisconsin DNR electronic system. However, there is a processing fee of $2.50. The stamps are also available at the Post Office for the base fee, which is currently $15.00.
