PUBLIC LAND SURVEY SYSTEM
The primary mission of the County Surveyor is to remonument and maintain the section
and quarter section corners in the public land survey system and to maintain the
Courthouse survey records.
GPS, NGS, AND USGS SURVEY MARKERS
The secondary mission is to establish and maintain global positioning system survey
markers, maintain existing National Geodetic and U.S. Geological Survey markers, survey
county lands as needed, support various county departments with survey services as needed,
maintain the highway department's road right-of-way records, check plats and certified
survey maps, and answer survey questions from the public at large to the extent of our
capabilities.
La Crosse County was originally surveyed between 1844 and
1847. Wood posts and mounds of earth were set as survey markers at that time.
They have long since disappeared. These are the corners that are being remonumented with new permanent survey markers. The County
Surveyor will reset any section or quarter corner in the county for a landowner or
registered land surveyor. There is no charge for this service. Any landowner may submit a
request or petition for the remonumenting of these corners. The requests are taken on a
"first come-first serve" basis. A request may be upgraded on the list at the
discretion of the County Surveyor. The request system is similar to that was used in the
county over 100 years ago.
The County Surveyor does not do private property surveys for landowners. These surveys
must be done by private registered land surveyors. You may look in the yellow pages for
these surveyors or stop in at the County Surveyor's Office for a more complete list. The
County Surveyor is located in Room 104 of the La Crosse County Administrative Building.
COUNTY SURVEYOR RECORDS
Many landowners inquire as to whether or not their land was surveyed. This can be
answered by searching the County Surveyor Records and other land records in the County
Administrative Building. The County Surveyor Records are in Rooms 104 and 105 and can be
searched from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays.
CERTIFIED SURVEY MAPS
Another common questions is when is a survey required? La Crosse County requires that
any new parcel of five acres or less be surveyed and a Certified Survey Map be filed. This
applies only to the unincorporated areas. Sometimes a bank, title company, buyer, etc.
will require a survey. Only a land surveyor registered in Wisconsin can perform a property
survey.
Sometimes instead of a Certified Survey Map, a subdivision plat or a plat of survey may
be required or needed. The definition of these is by statute and code. All are legal
property surveys. Often what is required is not only by county ordinance, but also by
city, village, or town ordinance. As this varies around La Crosse County, ask the County
Surveyor what is required in your location.
In conclusion, it should be noted that the previous information only covers some basic
questions about the County Surveyor Office. For more detailed information call at
